Renovations include the first playing surface replacement since 1986

BALTIMORE, MD (Saturday, December 2, 2023) – Today, Mayor Brandon M. Scott, Baltimore City Recreation & Parks (BCRP), Council President Nick Mosby, Councilwoman Phylicia Porter (District 10), and South Baltimore residents celebrated renovations at William J. Myers Pavilion with a ribbon-cutting celebration. Upgrades, which include the replacement of the turf-field and installation of brand-new LED Lights, are in connection with the City’s Rec Rollout.

This marks the first playing-surface replacement at Myers Pavilion which originally opened as a soccer complex in 1986. Currently, the multi-use recreational facility hosts after-school programs, birthday parties, cheerleading contests, laser tag — and a host of other activities — along with indoor lacrosse, soccer, flag football, and sports-team practices.

“As we continue our Rec Rollout, Myers Pavilion is a perfect example of the kind of first-rate upgrades and historic investments we’re making in Recreation & Parks in neighborhoods all across our city,” said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. “Myers Pavilion is one of Baltimore’s most popular multi-use facilities and is a place where Baltimoreans of all ages -- particularly our young people -- can come to hang out with one another, play sports and do other activities, and grow into the best version of themselves. By ushering in a new era for Recreation & Parks in our city, it is easy to see the very real impact these investments will have on residents of all walks of life. Thank you to all our partners at the state and local level for their support in this effort, and for seeing the value in these investments.”

Additional completed improvements include new dasher boards, fitness equipment, and netting, along with fresh interior and exterior paint. The facility is also slated to receive additional upgrades such as a new custom-built, front-desk reception area; concession stand; lounge station; and scoreboard. There are also plans to install new signage in front of the building, repair the roof, improve insulation, and renovate the bathrooms and locker rooms.

“It is projects like these that underscore the City’s commitment to providing our residents with modern, state-of-the-art facilities to socialize and play in,” said BCRP Executive Director Reginald Moore. “We’re grateful that the State is also committed to partnering with us to upgrade our recreational spaces. Providing top-flight amenities aids us in doing our part to help improve the health and wellness of our residents by providing quality recreational programs and promoting fun, active lifestyles.”

The Myers-Pavilion project, financed by City and State funding, is expected to cost more than $1.5 million. Full renovations are expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

BCRP’s Rec Rollout includes a playground ribbon cutting and a series of groundbreaking celebrations announcing upcoming recreation center projects. The City is slated to announce upgrades at additional recreation spaces in the coming months.
