DPW Works to Restore Water After Downtown Steam Explosion

BALTIMORE, MD. (Sunday, May 14, 2023) - This evening, while BGE crews worked to install a gas line, a water main was struck in the 400 Block of W. Pratt Street. Shortly thereafter a steam explosion occurred, causing pieces of gravel and roadway to explode, injuring four people. Three of those individuals were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Water service interruptions have been reported at Marriott Inner Harbor, Hilton Baltimore hotels, and surrounding businesses.

While the Department of Public Works (DPW) works to restore water to residents and businesses affected by the explosion, the following roads will be closed until further notice:

  • Pratt Street between Green and Howard Streets
  • Eutaw Street between Pratt and Lombard Streets

Detours:

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard
  • Paca Street (Northbound traffic only)
