Mayor Scott's Statement on Police Redistricting Legislation
Monday Oct 3rd, 2022
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BALTIMORE, MD. (Monday, October 3, 2022) - Mayor Brandon M. Scott released the following statement in response to the passage of Baltimore City Council Bill #22-0257, establishing the new boundaries of the Baltimore Police Department Police Districts, this evening.
"I want to thank Council President Mosby and Councilman Schleifer for shepherding this legislation through the Council diligently and expeditiously. For over 60 years, our police department operated within outdated district boundaries. Boundaries that divided neighborhoods led to unbalanced police resources and hampered the effectiveness of our officers.
As a Councilman, I worked with Senator Cory McCray to ensure we were changing our districts regularly to account for our constantly evolving city. As Mayor, I am proud to announce that our new districts will reflect modern population and workload, crime trends, and community input. Ultimately, these districts optimize police response times and will facilitate better engagement between law enforcement and our communities. I look forward to signing the bill into law in the near future."
