Mayor Rawlings-Blake, Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund Announce Headquarters Relocation to Baltimore City 

Move to Locust Point Means More Space, Brand New State of the Art Facility

BALTIMORE, Md. (June 9, 2014)—Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund (MAIF) Executive Director M. Kent Krabbe, and representatives of the business community announced MAIF's plan to relocate the company's headquarters to McHenry Row in Baltimore's Locust Point neighborhood. MAIF will occupy two new floors to be built atop Building 2 of the existing Phillip's Seafood headquarters at 1215 East Fort Avenue. 

"This move is very exciting for Baltimore City and the Locust Point neighborhood," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. "Last week, I was in Locust Point for a major business announcement and I'm back again for today's great news! Baltimore City is a place where businesses increasingly want to locate because the City offers a live, work, play environment that companies require to attract and retain professional talent in today's economy. Baltimore City continues to grow as a hub for business and government."

 In recent years, through enhancements in technology and expansion of a remote working environment, MAIF has found itself occupying less than half of its current building located at 1750 Forest Drive in Annapolis. As a result, leadership began to explore alternative options for housing its approximately 240-person workforce.

Mr. Krabbe outlined the search criteria in Monday's announcement stating a commitment to finding a state-of-the-art location that provides employees with, "an energizing and collaborative work atmosphere, convenient access to amenities, and a healthy work/life/play environment while not adversely impacting daily commutes. We have found all of these attributes in the McHenry Row location."

Work on the new 60,000 square foot office is scheduled to be completed in mid-2015, with a tentative "move-in" date slated for Fall 2015. The project is situated adjacent to the existing McHenry Row and is being developed by Mark Sapperstein, who acquired the Phillips Seafood building earlier this year.

MAIF was created by the Maryland State Legislature in 1972 with a mission of reducing the number of uninsured motorists in the state by providing automobile insurance for Maryland residents, who are unable to obtain it elsewhere in the private insurance market.
