FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BALTIMORE, MD (Friday, February 12, 2021) — Mayor Brandon M. Scott released the following statement regarding the Maryland State Legislature’s historic vote to override Governor Hogan’s veto of HB1300/SB1000: Blueprint for Maryland’s Future:
“Words cannot describe how proud I am knowing that our children have a brighter future with the implementation of the Kirwan Commission recommendations. For too long, our children have been on the backburner. Instead of investing in the promise of their futures, we have failed to provide them the basic tools for their success and equitable investment. This will no longer be the case.
With the promise of Kirwan, our students will no longer be left to pick up the pieces of a broken system. The children of Baltimore, tomorrow’s future leaders will finally receive a once-in-a-generation opportunity to learn in equitably funded schools and be trained for the jobs of tomorrow.
This has been a long and hard-fought journey. Ensuring that every student in Maryland has access to a quality education, regardless of where they live, is no longer an option but a priority. I thank my colleagues in the legislature for standing against the Governor’s veto and standing up for our children. I also thank the many advocates, students, educators, and parents who made this a reality.
This is just the beginning. I look forward to continuing to support this life-changing legislation as we start the implementation process for the sake of our children’s futures.”
