Mayor's Statement on Census Estimates Showing Population Decline in Baltimore
Thursday Mar 26th, 2020
BALTIMORE, MD. — Today, the U.S. Census released estimated population figures that show Baltimore's count dipping below 600,000 residents for the first time in more than a century. Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young issued the following statement:
"The population estimates released today are extremely important and help underscore the critical need to get the 2020 Census count as complete and accurate as possible.
“I have made boosting Baltimore's completion rate for the 2020 Census a top priority for my administration. We can't afford to undercount our population.
"During a time of great challenge, federal funding tied to Census numbers are helping our City feed vulnerable children and seniors. We know that every dollar is needed and that we'll only get our fair share with a complete Census count.
"Just this morning, Baltimore's Census Complete Count Committee met virtually to strategize about how we make sure every Baltimore resident is counted.
"We have a lot of work ahead of us to make sure that every resident completes the 2020 Census. Completing the form is more important than ever, and I'm calling on every resident to do your part and get counted."
In order to increase our reach, and in keeping with social distancing guidelines, efforts will include outreach on social media, phone banking and texting by trusted messengers. The City is also planning to distribute information on the Census at each of the more than 50 meal sites throughout Baltimore.
