Inspired to Inspire: Champions & Visionaries

Every year I celebrate Women’s History Month in March. One of my personal programs is titled Inspired to Inspire. This year’s theme is Champions & Visionaries. We reached out to the city and encouraged men and women, young and old, to write an essay about the woman or women who inspire them most.

I was delighted to receive numerous essays written from the heart about women from all over the city, with varying backgrounds and cultural histories. Each one was an inspiration in its own right.

Innovation Districts

Baltimore is recognized as one of the global cities where innovation districts are emerging. The districts are identified as being different than the likes of Silicon Valley, which is in a suburban sector, somewhat isolated and without the benefits a city provides such as greater access to mixed-use housing, diverse retail, and other work environs.

Forbes ranks Baltimore 8th on its list of America’s Most Wired Cities for internet broadband adoption and the availability of public wireless hot spots. The magazine ranks Baltimore 6th on its list of best cities for tech jobs.

Mayor Rawlings-Blake 2/8/16 Veto Letter to City Council

This is an issue of responsible financial stewardship and the appropriateness of fiscal commitments to special interests being mandated in the City Charter. One of the hallmarks of sound fiscal management is maintaining the flexibility to adjust spending to meet our City's ever-changing and unexpected needs, priorities and economic conditions. Any restriction on this flexibility compromises that sound fiscal management and could be viewed negatively by bond rating agencies. Good fiscal stewardship explains why our City was able to more than double spending on after-school programs over the past five years. It also explains why we have embarked on an ambitious plan to enhance recreation centers. Overall, the City will spend $372 million on services for children and youth, including schools, pre-kindergarten, out-of-school time programming, libraries, child health, and more. This is an increase of $14 million, or nearly 4%, over Fiscal Year 2015.
