Last weekend, more than two dozen of our nation’s mayors joined me here in Baltimore for a leadership meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Our goal was to develop an agenda that we believe must be part of conversation as our nation picks the next president in 2016.
This week, I highlighted the important role that government can play in helping the private sector create jobs, and the ways that government can help prepare and connect our residents to those jobs.

This week we witnessed respectful, peaceful and lawful demonstrations as the first motions in the Freddie Gray trial were heard. I want to thank the citizens of Baltimore who gathered in the spirit of our City’s long history of peaceful protests.
As we all know, next week is the official beginning of the school year for Baltimore City. This year, like every year, Baltimore students will be heading back ready to learn and to grow.
