Heading back to school ready to learn

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, August 28, 2015

As we all know, next week is the official beginning of the school year for Baltimore City. This year, like every year, Baltimore students will be heading back ready to learn and to grow. From joining Dr. Wen to promote the importance of school vaccinations, to dropping in on Lexington Market’s back-to-school event, it was wonderful seeing everyone so excited about the upcoming first day of classes– particularly the joy on the faces of so many parents! But young people across Baltimore City are also taking the time to enjoy the fleeting days of summer vacation.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to join with Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert Manfred, Orioles legend and Hall of Famer, Frank Robinson, as well as former Orioles players Chris Hoiles and Tippy Martinez for Play Ball Month. A partnership between Major League Baseball and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, “Play Ball,” is an exciting and fun way for Mayors from across the country to connect with their communities in a family-oriented way. I loved the opportunity to join with hundreds of Baltimore’s young people for a day of baseball fun where I even got hitting pointers from Frank himself! It was a great day to showcase baseball as a sport that brings people together, offers new opportunity, and promotes lifelong healthy activity.

So from all of us here at City Hall, I want to wish Baltimore’s students–and their parents–a very happy last weekend of summer vacation, and the best of luck for a wonderful, fun, and productive school year!
