Monica Lewis is the Senior Director of the Mayor’s Office of Communications. In this role, Lewis workswork with Mayor Scott and Chief of Staff Michael Huber to create core messaging for the administration. She is responsible for providing oversight of the Office of Communications staff, establishing departmental priorities and developing long-term communications strategies for both local and national media.
An accomplished communications professional with nearly 25 years of experience in writing, public relations and event planning & production, Monica comes to Baltimore from Philadelphia, Pa. where she was Deputy Chief of Communications for the School District of Philadelphia. There, her primary responsibilities included managing media relations and serving as the District’s spokesperson.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa. and raised in New Castle, Del., Monica is a graduate of Howard University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, where she earned a Master of Science degree in Journalism. She's been a reporter for The Courier Post (Cherry Hill, NJ), The New York Post, ESPN The Magazine and The Philadelphia Tribune.
Monica has a wealth of experience in public relations for non-profit organizations, including the American Heart Association, the Urban League of Philadelphia and United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. She’s also spent time in corporate communications as a Media Relations Manager for AmeriHealth Caritas, developing strategic communications plans for markets in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Louisiana.
Monica is passionate about serving her community. She is a Diamond Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and a founding member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Twelve Days of Christmas, Inc., a national organization that raises funds to support children and families in communities across the country. A wellness enthusiast, Monica enjoys regularly engaging in fitness activities, primarily strength training and cardio. However, her greatest joy comes from her two children, her daughter, Courtney, and son, Evan.
