Mother Day Tribute to Top Neighborhood Moms

The impact strong women have in our communities is immeasurable. Their love for our city, its culture, history, and traditions is shown through their dedication to family, friends and our neighborhoods. Earlier this week I honored seventeen community leaders and nurturers at my tenth annual Baltimore’s Top Neighborhood Moms event. These caretakers are often quiet, unsung sheroes and I was thrilled to recognize them.

The honorees—not necessarily mothers themselves—demonstrate a motherly love for their neighborhoods by giving back. They are women who make a year-round commitment to building a thriving city of wonderful communities. We should all emulate their dedication.

I have been inspired by the remarkable generosity and spirit of Baltimore’s Top Neighborhood Moms over the past ten years. Getting to know these women has been one of the joys of being Mayor.

I would like to highlight a few of the honorees:

The Hamilton Hills Neighborhood Association nominated Regina Buker. As a lecturer, author and community leader; Regina has been an advocate for others since the age of 17 as one of the first employees of the Harbel Community Organization. She was a warning voice during the time of predatory lending and has worked in educating homebuyers through the Harbel Housing program. She has also worked with expectant women, teaching them the Lamaze method for natural child birth – empowering them to make decisions on giving birth. Regina unites people to catalyze change. Baltimore is transforming because of people like Regina Buker.

Meaghan Grace was nominated by both the Waltherson and Cedmont Community Improvement Association. Through her efforts, Northeast Baltimore is more connected and family oriented. Meaghan’s reading programs connect seniors with toddlers, which have enriched the lives of many. She has also coordinated events for park clean ups, play dates, tree lightings, and numerous other events that bring people together. Meaghan’s energy is infectious and the results of her events are timeless. Meaghan Grace is blending our neighborhoods and we are better for it.

Beth Marshall is committed to helping Baltimore’s children. As the assistant director to the Center of Adolescence Health at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, she has positively impacted the lives of our youth. From finding scholarships and grants to assistance with housing needs, Baltimore is better because of Beth. And it’s not only the human kind that benefit from her generous spirit, she also fosters animals and rescues, teaming the animals with neighborhood children. We are stronger because of Beth Marshall.

Every one of our Top Moms is known for always being there to help those in need. Regardless of the time of day or service required, these women answer the call. Be it to get to a doctor’s appointment, pick up medications, babysit, or grocery shop, they answer their phone and many times put their own lives on hold to help.

We all have something to contribute, and we all must continue to fight for a brighter future—together, as one Baltimore.
