General Manager, CharmTV
Tonia Lee is a goal-smashing Communications Executive with a track record of driving superior business results in communications, content, technology, and platforms.
In her current role as General Manager of CharmTV, CharmTV.tv, and CharmTV Productions and Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Cable and Communications, Tonia leads day-to-day operations and has oversight of programming, production, digital, sponsorships, branding, publicity, partnerships, broadcast operations, and technology for CharmTV. During her tenure, Tonia has expanded the number of platforms that CharmTV is available on beyond television to include the Internet, mobile devices, live streaming, and video on demand.
In her first two years at the network, Tonia introduced (CharmTV.tv), making CharmTV programming available to audiences globally whenever and wherever. She has also introduced more than 1,100 hours of programming in primetime for the network, further positioning the network as the visual ambassador for Baltimore and beyond. Most recently, Tonia negotiated the City’s renewal of a 10-year franchise agreement with Comcast that is expected to deliver more than $114 million in revenue to the City.
Prior to her career in public service, Tonia was Vice President, Business Operations and Strategy at TV ONE, LLC (an NBC Universal venture) where she led greenlight and development processes that more than doubled original programming in her first year. As a result of her efforts, the network at that time achieved one of the highest-rated months on record.
As Vice President, New Products (Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.) Tonia led digital product efforts across Turner’s brands including CNN, TBS, TNT, and Cartoon Network. During her tenure, Tonia managed a private beta of a news-oriented social network whose functionality was once incorporated into HLNTV.com.
Tonia’s previous roles have included Director, Corporate Development and Director, Technology Strategy and Development (The Weather Channel Companies); Vice President / Senior Equity Research Analyst (RBC Capital Markets); and equity research and product management roles in the technology sector at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Inc.
An innovative thinker with a deep understanding of the digital space, Tonia was one of the first two analysts on Wall Street to identify and write about the new digital infrastructure investment sector. She was one of only 17 employees across a 700-employee organization (the Weather Channel) to have a U.S. patent issued (#7627577 issued 12/1/09).
Tonia earned her MBA with a concentration in Finance from The Wharton School, which included a graduate business exchange at London Business School. She earned her BA in International Relations at the University of Pennsylvania.
Tonia is an active philanthropist serving as volunteer board member or member of several charitable organizations. She is currently on the board Higher Achievement Baltimore. She also serves as Ambassadors for The Links, Incorporated’s Vision 2020 Campaign and the National Museum of African-American History and Culture. Tonia is a member of the Smithsonian Legacy Society and the Harrison Society of the University of Pennsylvania. She is a former Board Member of Girls Inc. DC, Samaritan House of Atlanta, and Community Consulting Teams Atlanta. She also served as Programming Chair on the Executive Board of Women in Cable and Telecommunications Atlanta. Tonia is an avid sports fan and enjoys reading about leadership, strategy, and vision.
