FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BALTIMORE, MD (Friday, August 20, 2021) — Today, Mayor Brandon M. Scott announced that this year’s annual Backpack Giveaway event will be held on Thursday, August 26 at Middle Branch Park in South Baltimore. The distribution, which will include 4,000 backpacks stuffed with school supplies, will begin at 3:00p .m. and continue until supplies last. This event will be held in partnership with AFRAM.

“I am thrilled to partner with BCRP and AFRAM to ensure that our students are properly equipped with the essential resources needed to tackle this school year,” said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. “It is crucial that we come together to support our young people. This is the kind of community-building and empowerment that defines Baltimore City.”

Students in elementary, middle and high school can receive one of 4,000 new backpacks filled with free, grade-appropriate, school supplies. The backpacks will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. All Baltimore City Public Schools students are encouraged to participate. Tickets will be available at the AFRAM check-in table and can be used to pick up backpacks at the Mayor’s Office tent while supplies last. Parents or guardians will receive one ticket per student present. Students need to be present and accompanied by an adult to receive a backpack.

Following the giveaway, residents are strongly encouraged to attend the AFRAM Bike Party and Alfresco event to enjoy live music, food and numerous family-friendly activities along South Baltimore’s waterfront. Residents are also encouraged to join Miles Thomas — @milezarelli on Instagram — as he gathers several community bike groups to the event from St. Mary’s Park at 5 p.m. Event parking is available at the Harbor Hospital lot, adjacent from the park, and ADA parking is available at the Middle Branch Boat House lot.
